Day 03 · Week 01 · What Is a Tactic?

Loose Pieces

Turn Day 02's forcing-move scan into a concrete habit: before calculating combinations, notice pieces that are undefended or defended inadequately.

A loose piece is a piece whose safety depends on the opponent not noticing it. The simplest case is an undefended piece. A more subtle case is an overloaded defender: the piece looks defended, but the defender cannot meet two jobs at once. Loose pieces are tactical targets because checks, captures and threats become stronger when one unit has no stable protection.

Start with a board-wide inventory: kings, queens, rooks, minor pieces, then pawns. Ask: what is attacked, what is defended, and what changed after the last move? Only then search forcing moves. A free capture is attractive, but a capture is correct only if the opponent's best reply does not win more back.

The training goal is not 'take hanging pieces.' It is 'notice instability, compare forcing options, and verify the reply.'

Training flow: 1. 60-second loose-piece scan on two simple boards. 2. Coach demonstration: attacked vs loose vs tactically protected. 3. Guided calculation using MY MOVE → OPPONENT'S STRONGEST RESPONSE → MY NEXT. 4. Independent set mixing free pieces, overloaded defenders and poisoned captures. 5. Reflection: name the first square/piece you should scan in your own games.

Common errors: Equating 'attacked' with 'free'. Capturing before checking for zwischenzug or mate threats. Ignoring that a defender is pinned/overloaded. Scanning only near the king and missing a loose piece elsewhere.

Mastery gate: At least 6/8 correct, with no poisoned-capture error in the final three positions.

Review: Write one sentence: 'A piece is loose when…' Then review one position from Day 02 and identify whether any loose piece changed the CCT order.
