Day 23 · Week 04 · Advanced Motifs & Calculation Hygiene

Removal of Defender & Overload

Teach how tactical targets become vulnerable when a defender is eliminated or forced to do too many jobs.

A target may look safe because it is defended. The important question is: by whom, and what else is that defender responsible for? Removal of defender is direct; overload is structural pressure on one piece with incompatible duties.

The student should map defender→duties before calculating. This makes the tactic understandable rather than magical.

Training flow: 1. Defender mapping drill. 2. Direct removal examples. 3. Pin-the-defender examples. 4. Overload examples with two duties. 5. Defensive resource search.

Common errors: Capturing a defender without checking recapture. Calling any busy piece overloaded. Missing a replacement defender. Ignoring king-safety duty.

Mastery gate: 7/8 correct and accurate defender-duty map.

Review: For one overload position, list both duties the defender cannot maintain.
