Day 08 · Week 02 · Forks

Knight Forks

Build precise recognition of knight fork geometry and calculation of fork consequences.

Knight forks are geometric. A knight attacks up to eight squares, ignores intervening pieces, and often becomes dangerous when it attacks the king and another valuable piece simultaneously. The strongest fork is not always the most visually impressive one; the landing square must be safe enough or the gain must justify the sacrifice.

The student should learn to scan both forward and backward: Where can my knight fork? Where can the opponent's knight fork me?

Training flow: 1. Knight-geometry warm-up without full positions. 2. Find every checking knight move. 3. Compare two fork squares by material outcome. 4. Defensive scan for opponent fork squares. 5. Timed puzzle set.

Common errors: Seeing the fork but not counting the knight's fate. Ignoring a stronger checking fork. Not scanning opponent knight jumps. Treating every double attack as equal.

Mastery gate: 7/8 correct and must identify all legal knight forks on the final two boards.

Review: On an empty board, name the knight's attacked squares from d4, e5 and b2.
