Day 04 · Week 01 · What Is a Tactic?
Tactical Triggers
Teach the visual events that should immediately switch the student from normal planning into tactical calculation mode.
Tactics rarely appear from nowhere. They are usually announced by a change in the position. A king loses a pawn shield, two valuable pieces line up, a defender becomes pinned, a piece moves away from a square, or a pawn reaches one step from promotion. These are tactical triggers.
A trigger is not a move. It is a reason to search. When you see one, switch into forcing mode: checks, captures, threats, strongest reply. The strongest players do not calculate every legal move; they know what visual clues deserve calculation first.
Today the student builds a trigger vocabulary. The aim is to look at a new position and say, before moving, 'Something tactical may exist because…'
Training flow: 1. Rapid trigger-identification drill with no moves allowed. 2. Coach contrasts true triggers with visually dramatic but irrelevant features. 3. For each board, state trigger first, candidates second, calculation third. 4. Mixed set: some positions have a tactic, some deliberately do not. 5. End with a verbal checklist that can be used in real games.
Common errors: Treating every trigger as a guaranteed combination. Naming a motif before calculating legality. Ignoring opponent counter-checks. Looking for exotic tactics before simple captures.
Mastery gate: Correctly identify trigger + best candidate family on 7/8 positions; must reject both no-tactic control positions.
Review: Keep a five-word trigger list beside the board for the next three lessons.
