Day 05 · Week 01 · What Is a Tactic?

King Safety & Open Lines

Connect king safety to concrete line-opening tactics and teach when checks become urgent.

King safety is not a vague feeling. It can be inspected. Count the pawn shield, locate open lines, identify attackers and defenders, and ask whether a forcing move can remove the last barrier.

Open lines increase the power of rooks, bishops and queens. A check on an open line is forcing, but it is only strong if the checking piece cannot simply be captured or blocked. Before launching an attack, calculate every legal defensive response: king move, capture, interposition, counter-check.

The practical habit is simple: when a line opens toward a king, re-run CCT immediately. A quiet position can become tactical after one pawn move or exchange.

Training flow: 1. Map all files/diagonals that touch the king zone. 2. Demonstrate a line that looks open but is tactically closed by an interposition. 3. Calculate three checking candidates in order of force. 4. Defensive drill: find the one move that closes or contests the attacking line. 5. Timed mixed set.

Common errors: Counting attackers but not defenders. Assuming check is automatically best. Forgetting interpositions. Sacrificing on the king without a continuation.

Mastery gate: 7/8 correct with full defensive reply named on every checking exercise.

Review: Review one of your own recent games or a sample game and mark the moment a file/diagonal toward a king opened.
