Day 16 · Week 03 · Pins, Skewers & Discoveries

Exploiting & Breaking Pins

Train both sides of the pin: increasing pressure when you own the pin and escaping efficiently when you suffer it.

A pin becomes useful when pressure exceeds defense or when the pinned piece is overloaded. Exploiting a pin may mean adding an attacker, opening the line, removing a defender, or using the pin to win another target.

Breaking a pin can be equally tactical: move the king, interpose, challenge the pinning piece, create a counter-threat, or tactically allow the pinned piece to move because the line no longer matters.

Training flow: 1. Exploit vs break classification. 2. Add-pressure demonstration. 3. King-move and interposition unpin examples. 4. Counterattack as pin-breaking resource. 5. Mixed attacker/defender set.

Common errors: Automatically attacking a pinned piece again. Breaking the pin with a passive move when counterplay exists. Trading the pinning piece without checking recapture. Missing that the pin has disappeared after king movement.

Mastery gate: 6/8 correct with both attacking and defensive pin solutions represented.

Review: Write two pin-breaking methods that do not involve moving the pinned piece.
