Day 22 · Week 04 · Advanced Motifs & Calculation Hygiene

Deflection & Decoy

Teach two forcing ideas that manipulate defenders and target squares.

Deflection removes a piece from a job it is performing: defending mate, guarding a queen, blocking a file. Decoy attracts a piece onto a square where another tactic works. The difference matters because it clarifies what the setup move is trying to accomplish.

Both motifs require a forced or highly constrained reply. If the opponent can simply refuse the idea without cost, the combination is not sound.

Training flow: 1. Deflection vs decoy classification. 2. Mate-defense deflection examples. 3. Attraction/decoy examples. 4. Two-step combinations. 5. Defensive refusal/resource exercise.

Common errors: Using motif labels loosely. Assuming the opponent must capture. Ignoring a stronger defense. Sacrificing without a concrete payoff.

Mastery gate: 7/8 correct; setup purpose must be stated before move submission on final four.

Review: Write one sentence contrasting deflection and decoy.
