Day 12 · Week 02 · Forks

Avoiding Forks

Build prophylactic awareness so students stop losing material to predictable fork squares.

Avoiding forks begins one move earlier than the fork itself. Before committing a piece, ask whether two valuable targets will become reachable by one enemy move. Knight fork squares, pawn fork squares and checking queen/rook forks deserve special attention.

Good prevention is economical. You do not need to panic and retreat everything; often one target can move, the fork square can be controlled, or the forking piece can be removed.

Training flow: 1. Opponent-threat scan. 2. Mark dangerous fork squares. 3. Compare three prevention methods: move target, control square, remove attacker. 4. Defensive puzzle set. 5. Blunder-prevention speed round.

Common errors: Defending the wrong fork square. Creating a new tactical weakness while preventing the fork. Ignoring counterplay. Assuming every double attack must be prevented.

Mastery gate: 7/8 correct and must choose the most economical defense on final two positions.

Review: Add 'opponent fork squares?' to the personal blunder-check list.
